Holiday apartment in Kalameny – thermal spring, educational trail and Liptovský hrad

Kalameny combines warm thermal water, an informative educational trail and medieval history. The thermal spring is located in the Kalamenská Valley in the Choč Mountains, about 1 km north of Kalameny. It originated from an artificial borehole drilled in 1991–1992; the water is approximately 33 °C warm.

Nature

The Kalameny–Liptovský hrad educational trail leads from the centre of Kalameny first to the thermal spring with its bathing pond. It then continues across meadows and through the forest to the ruins of Liptovský hrad. The route provides information about the history of Kalameny and Liptovský hrad as well as the local geology, water cycle and forest.

The route of the educational trail thus connects different landscapes and areas of knowledge: it begins at the thermal spring in the valley, followed by open meadows and forest sections before reaching the medieval castle ruins. History, water, geology and forest are therefore not arranged as separate topics but are linked together along the route.

The pond at the Kalameny thermal spring is used for public bathing all year round. Liptovský hrad offers views of the Western Tatras, the Liptov Basin, the Low Tatras, part of the Greater Fatra and the distinctive Veľký Choč.

Culture

Liptovský hrad was built in the Middle Ages on the 993-metre-high Sestrč. The castle was established in 1262 during the reign of King Béla IV and was demolished in 1474 on the orders of King Matthias Corvinus. The Liptovský hrad area is a national cultural monument. The original, excavated foundations of the castle are publicly accessible today and are freely accessible to the public.

There is also a cultural detail to discover in the village itself: the Roman Catholic church in Kalameny has interior wall paintings.

Thus, two different forms of visible history stand side by side in Kalameny: the interior wall paintings of the village church and the excavated foundations of the medieval castle on Sestrč. The educational trail connects both historical points of reference with the landscape and water information along the route.

The starting point of the educational trail is clearly located in the village centre. The “Kalameny,,kult.dom” bus stop is directly at the beginning of the trail. At the beginning of the educational trail in the centre of Kalameny, there is also a paid car park by the church.

Several mountains are located in the vicinity of Kalameny: Plieška, Turanská Magura, Havrania and Magura. The ruins of Likava and the Bešeňová Thermal Park are also located nearby. Orava Castle is in the wider regional surroundings of Kalameny.

At the same time, Kalameny’s location places it in a landscape with thermal water, forest and meadow sections, as well as distinctive viewpoints. The educational trail brings these different elements together in a set sequence: from the village centre to the spring, then through meadows and forest to the excavated foundations of the medieval Liptovský hrad.
