Holiday apartment in Ivachnova – nature, culture and tradition on the Váh

At the heart of Ivachnová lies Ivachnovský luh, a remarkable protected natural area. The area covers 12 hectares and is the northernmost floodplain forest in Slovakia. At the same time, it is considered the last remnant of an alluvial forest in the elevated basins of the Western Carpathians. Up to 90 bird species occur there, while 162 species of higher plants also grow in Ivachnovský luh. The natural area is home to 30 mammal species. Ivachnovský luh is subject to the fifth level of protection; access is prohibited. No marked cycle path leads through Ivachnová, and no marked hiking trail begins there.

Location

Ivachnová lies on the Váh River. A bridge connects the village with Liptovská Teplá on the opposite bank. On the eastern edge of Ivachnová lies the Kozí vŕšok complex, with a restaurant and a shop. Local dairy products are sold there, including cheese made from goat’s, sheep’s and cow’s milk, as well as yoghurts.

Culture

The Roman Catholic church in Ivachnová is dedicated to Saints Cyril and Methodius. Its solemn consecration took place on 13 November 1993. The church also contains a relic preserving a drop of blood from Pope John Paul II.

The name Cyrilometodské hody refers to the same two saints as the church. The church and the festival thus combine religious references with different forms of public life: in one case as a consecrated sacred building and place of relics, and in the other as a time-limited programme with music, dancing, refreshments and competitions.

The Kaplnka sv. Jána Nepomuckého is part of the local architectural and commemorative culture. The Neoclassical roadside chapel dates from 1858, replaced a wooden structure from 1828 and was restored in 1926. It stands in the northern part of Ivachnová, on a road along the bank of the Váh.

The chapel also complements this picture through its distinctive historical character. Its Neoclassical form, predecessor building, restoration and location by the river identify different layers through which the village’s architectural and commemorative culture can be understood.

Traditions

The Cyrilometodské hody in Ivachnová took place for the 25th time in 2025. The programme included a performance by the group Los Bombarderos and dancing with a DJ. Refreshments, a raffle and competitions for men, women and children were also offered. A children’s corner, a bouncy castle and face painting complemented the festival programme.

Pálenie Jánskej vatry also continues to be maintained as a tradition in Ivachnová. The 2025 edition offered visitors refreshments, a fire pit for children and entertainment.

Character of the village

Between the Váh, the protected Ivachnovský luh, the religious buildings and the local festivals, Ivachnová reveals different sides within a closely connected thematic space. Natural history information, sacred sites, local products and contemporary event offerings stand side by side, without reducing the village to just one facet.
