Holiday apartment in Ružomberok – UNESCO heritage and mountain trails

Vlkolínec is a district of the town of Ružomberok and was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1993. The site comprises 43 almost untouched historic farmsteads, the Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary from 1875, a bell tower built in 1770 and a school building. Ružomberok combines this insight into traditional folk architecture with historic squares, technical monuments and marked trails into the mountain landscape.

Culture

Námestie Andreja Hlinku is a historic square with an original narrow medieval parcel structure. Its basic form emerged around the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries. The U37 006 monument also commemorates the history of the region. It commemorates the historic steam locomotive U37 006, whose train supplied a field hospital in Korytnica with provisions during the Slovak National Uprising. The monument is located a few dozen metres from Ružomberok railway and bus stations.

The historic traces therefore extend from the medieval parcel structure and the 1770 bell tower to the steam locomotive's deployment during the Slovak National Uprising. The 1875 church and Vlkolínec's inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1993 are also part of this chronological sequence. At the Liptovské múzeum, the history of the region is represented by a collection of almost 200,000 objects. The museum is currently closed due to renovation work.

Nature

The municipal area of Ružomberok lies in the protected zone of Nízke Tatry National Park. Brankovský vodopád is a national natural monument protecting a 55 m high waterfall. Jazierske travertíny is also a natural monument and has been protected since 1952.

Both details form part of the natural-history classification of the municipal area, which lies in the protected zone of Nízke Tatry National Park.

Trails and viewpoints

The Ružomberok–Sidorovo–Malinô Brdo route leads from the centre of Ružomberok via the Calvary of Ružomberok and the Sidorovo ridge to the Malinô Brdo ski resort. The route offers views of the Liptovská kotlina, the Západné Tatry, the Chočské vrchy, the Nízke Tatry, the Veľká Fatra and the Malá Fatra.

The summit of Malinné can be reached from the centre of Ružomberok via a blue-marked hiking trail through the Vlkolínske lúky meadows. From the summit, there are views of the Malinô Brdo ski resort, the Chočské vrchy, the Západné Tatry, the Liptovská kotlina, as well as parts of the Vysoké Tatry and the Nízke Tatry.

The Biely Potok–Vlkolínec–Hrabovo route serves as an access route to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Vlkolínec, a settlement of traditional folk architecture. It begins in Biely Potok at the bus stop „Ružomberok,Biely Potok,pri moste“ or at the MHD stop „Pri moste“. At the end of the route, seasonal city buses from Ružomberok operate.

The trails described therefore connect different landscapes: one route runs from the town centre via Kalvária and the Sidorovo ridge to the Malinô Brdo ski resort, another leads via the Vlkolínske lúky meadows to the summit of Malinné, and the route from Biely Potok reaches Vlkolínec. The named destinations and viewpoints include the Liptovská kotlina, several Tatry mountain ranges, the Chočské vrchy, as well as the Veľká Fatra and the Malá Fatra.
