Vavrišovo in the Belá Valley – Tatra Views, History and Trails

Vavrišovo lies in the eastern part of the Liptov Basin, in the valley of the Belá River. From Vavrišovo, there are panoramic views of the Low, Western and High Tatras. The village landscape brings together the river setting, distant views and traces of history.

Landscape and Nature

The Natura 2000 site SKUEV0141 includes, among other areas, the cadastral territory of Vavrišovo. In the SKUEV0141 area, mountain watercourses and herbaceous vegetation along their banks are recorded as habitat type 3220. Vavrišovo has characteristic Humná barns, whose distinctive architecture helps shape the view of the entire landscape. The protected area and the habitat type can be understood as two separate levels: one identifies the area, while the other identifies the recorded natural features.

History

Vavrišovo is mentioned as early as 1286 as the property of Mikuláš, son of Serefelov. In August 1709, a battle took place in the territory of Vavrišovo as part of the uprising of the estates led by Francis II Rákóczi, between the insurgent Kuruc forces and the imperial troops, known as the Labancs; Vavrišovo was burned down in the process. The Museum of the Battle of Vavrišovo was established in memory of the battle in August 1709.

Church and Village Landscape

The Evangelical church in Vavrišovo is a Neo-Romanesque building constructed between 1881 and 1884. Its entrance tower dates from 1928. The interior includes a Neoclassical altar from the second half of the 19th century, as well as a pulpit depicting Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon. At the church, the architectural form, construction period, tower and interior stand alongside one another as distinct historical points of interest.

The Živá rieka trail is an easy walk along the river and is particularly suitable for an excursion with children.
