Holiday apartment in Partizánska Ľupča – historic churches and Magurka

Partizánska Ľupča features a cultural heritage zone whose urban structure is based on a layout established in the Middle Ages with a central square. More recent historical building structures and green spaces have partially altered this structure.

Culture

Many buildings in the Partizánska Ľupča cultural heritage zone preserve authentic historic façades and interiors with valuable artistic craftsmanship details and artistic furnishings.

The central square serves as the historical reference point of the village layout. At the same time, its present form represents the chronological layering of the villagescape, because the medieval structure was not left completely unchanged by later building structures and green spaces.

The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Matthew was built on the square in the last third of the 13th century. In the 16th century, a fortified protective wall with loopholes was built around the church; the tower was also rebuilt. The building preserves a former guardroom and a narrow balcony running around the tower.

At the northern edge of Partizánska Ľupča, the Roman Catholic Church of the Seven Sorrows of Mary was built in 1263. It preserves a Gothic entrance to the sacristy and, on the southern side, an original Gothic portal with shafts in the reveal.

The two churches thus represent different periods of the village's history: the Church of Saint Matthew belongs to the medieval core around the square, while the Church of the Seven Sorrows of Mary has its own spatial context at the northern edge of Partizánska Ľupča. Their preserved architectural elements make historical features visible at various locations throughout the village.

Partizánska Ľupča also has a market tradition that is among the oldest in the Liptov region.

The market tradition complements the architectural heritage with a historical function of the village. Together with the central square, the churches and the preserved furnishing details, it creates a villagescape in which public, religious and artisan-designed elements remain recognisable alongside one another.

Landscape

The unique landscape structure of the Ľupčianka was decisive for the design of the urban structure and transport links of the Partizánska Ľupča cultural heritage zone.

Magurka is a former mining settlement at an elevation of 1,080 metres in the Ľupčianska Valley of the Low Tatras. It lies below the peaks of Latiborská hoľa, at 1,648 metres, Ďurková, at 1,749 metres, and Chabenec, at 1,955 metres.

The landscape around Partizánska Ľupča thus extends from the village structure shaped by the Ľupčianka to the former mining settlement of Magurka in the Ľupčianska Valley. The named peaks define the mountain-related framework of this landscape area, without Magurka itself being described as a peak.

Gold mining in the area around Magurka began around 1250.

The mining history associated with Magurka also forms one of the chronological layers connected with the gold mining that began around 1250. The designation as a former mining settlement preserves the historical status of this place and does not describe current use.

Hiking

A blue-marked hiking trail begins at the southern end of Partizánska Ľupča, known as Biela Ľupča.
