Gotovany: Culture, Water and History South of Liptovská Mara

Gôtovany combines a clearly defined location with cultural history and water-related themes. The municipality lies south of the Liptovská Mara reservoir and west of the town of Liptovský Mikuláš. The cadastral area ranges from 575 to 714 metres in elevation.

Landscape and Water

The landscape includes Gôtovanská zátoka, with grassy banks lined by poplars, willows and alders. The bay is located near Gôtovany and is designated as a separate carp fishing ground. The VN Gôtovany – Sokolčianska zátoka fishing ground is part of the Liptovská Mara reservoir; carp and predatory fish are found there in particular. Thus, the waterside landscape and the designated fishing ground form part of a shared water-related local setting, without both names describing the same area in the same way.

Culture and History

The Evangelical prayer house in Gôtovany is one of the municipality’s most significant cultural and historical features, but it is not classified as a national cultural monument. In the Fiačice district, there is a chapel in the municipal office. Today’s municipality of Gôtovany and the Fiačice district originated as two independent municipalities; Fiačice was incorporated into Gôtovany in 1924.

In the vicinity of Gôtovany are the Havránok open-air archaeological site, with reconstructed Celtic buildings, and an exhibition in the tower of the former Church of the Virgin Mary that commemorates the historical context of the reservoir. During the summer season, Havránok hosts demonstrations of sword fighting, Celtic rituals and various handicrafts.

In 1960, the furnishings from the former Evangelical church in Mlynica were brought to a safe place in the municipality of Gôtovany. Mlynica fell victim to the construction of a dam in the Liptov region. The local history therefore encompasses both the development of the Fiačice district and the relocation of historical furnishings connected with the construction of the dam.

Events

Gôtovany Municipal Day was announced for 22 August 2026. In 2025, it was held for the ninth time and included a raffle with more than 80 prizes. In addition, three teams took part in a competition to cook halušky.

At a Mikuláš event in Gôtovany, children from the local kindergarten presented a cultural programme for parents, seniors and other attendees. The Mikuláš event also included a Christmas market with hot punch and homemade cakes. The event marking the Month of Respect for Older Persons was described as traditional and included a performance by children from the local kindergarten for seniors.

The Gôtovany Municipal Ball was once again held as a convivial evening and featured a photo booth. The modernisation of the hall in the Gôtovany cultural centre is intended to increase comfort when holding cultural, social and community events.
