Lubela: Landscape, Culture and Cycling Route in the Liptov Basin

Ľubeľa lies in the southern part of the Liptov Basin, in the valley of the Kľačianka on a floodplain and on a glacial cone at the foot of the Low Tatras. The floodplain, valley and glacial cone refer to different elements of the location, while the Low Tatras characterize the southern mountain area of the village.

Landscape

The southern mountainous part of the Ľubeľa area is predominantly covered with spruce forest; there are meadows in places. The Kľačianka stream flows through the area and rises in Liptovské Kľačany. Thus, wooded slopes and open meadows, as well as the course of the stream, are all part of the described landscape of the village. There are also mineral springs in the Ľubeľa area.

A very small part of the Nízke Tatry National Park extends along the southern edge of the Ľubeľa cadastral area; the third level of protection applies there. This information expressly refers to the southern edge of the cadastral area and supplements the description of the forest, meadows and waterways with the protection status mentioned there.

Culture

The crystalline rock of the Ľubeľská dolina contains antimony mineralization and former mines. The reference to former mines points to the previous use of this landscape area. Ľubeľa also has two different village bell towers.

The masonry bell tower is a simply whitewashed square building with a wooden upper structure and a hipped roof. Beside it stands a wooden village bell tower, a traditional square wooden structure with an open upper floor and a pyramidal roof. The two towers therefore differ in their material, upper floor and roof design.

The reconstructed monument to the Slovak National Uprising (SNP) was ceremonially unveiled in front of the Ľubeľa cultural center. Every year in July, Ľubeľafest, an amateur theater festival, takes place in Ľubeľa. Thus, architectural landmarks, a monument and a recurring cultural event stand side by side in the village.

Surroundings

The ruins of Likava are located near Ľubeľa. Also in the surroundings are the mountains Magura Lipče, Beran and Hľačovo, the Demänovská Jaskyňa cave and Besenova Thermal Park. Orava Castle is located in the wider regional surroundings of Ľubeľa. The destinations mentioned therefore range from ruins and mountains to a cave, a park and a castle; their geographical relationships remain different.

On the Way

The blue-marked educational cycling route N2401 from Vlkolínec to Pribylina passes through Ľubeľa. The route connects the two places mentioned and makes Ľubeľa a section of this marked route.

On August 31, 2024, two tennis courts were ceremonially opened in Ľubeľa; they were intended to serve pupils, young people, the public and visitors. Thus, the opening statement specifies both the date and the intended user groups.
