Landscape and Nature

The Low Tatras form the dominant natural area of the municipality of Dúbrava and cover almost two-thirds of its territory. Chabenec reaches an elevation of 1,955 metres above sea level on the main ridge of the Low Tatras at the southern border of the municipality of Dúbrava. The Dúbravka River is the largest watercourse flowing through the cadastral area of Dúbrava. Dúbrava belongs to the Nízke Tatry Natura 2000 site. The mountain ridge, river and protected-area designation describe different geographical facets of the locality.

Mining and Trails

Banícka faleska serves as a memorial space displaying historical artefacts from the period when mining flourished in Dúbrava. In the Predpekelná section, eight miners from Dúbrava extracted antimony ore by blasting it with gunpowder and carrying it to the surface in wooden troughs.

Náučný chodník Banícka cesta is a 6.3-kilometre-long, easy educational and walking trail that begins at Štátne majetky in Dúbrava. Five information boards stand along the trail through Dúbravská dolina. Banícka faleska is accessible by car; free parking is available in front of the mining buildings. Trail length, trail character, starting point and information boards provide different reference points for planning a day trip. The memorial space and educational trail each offer their own way of exploring the mining history.

Culture and History

The Church of Kostol sv. Ondreja apoštola in Dúbrava dates from the 13th century. In the 17th century, Kostol sv. Ondreja apoštola was remodelled and fortified in the Renaissance style. Remains of Gothic wall paintings have been preserved inside Kostol sv. Ondreja apoštola. The building history and surviving pictorial remains point to different historical layers of the church building.

The old customs handed down in Dúbrava included carrying the “Murieny” out of the village before Easter and drowning it in water. They also included carrying out Dedko, bonfires for St John’s Eve and other customs before Christmas. The traditional customs thus relate to different points in the course of the year.

Events

The annual Deň baníckej obce Dúbrava was held in Dúbrava on 14 September 2024. The children’s group of FSk Chabenec performs folklore programmes at events in Dúbrava and outside the municipality. The date, catering, crafts and folklore are distinct components of the event.
