Malatíny lies in the western Liptov Valley in the valley of the Malatianka stream. Nižný Malatín was the oldest settlement among the historic settlements of Malatíny.

Culture and History

The Museum of the Liptov Village in Pribylina displays a granary from Nižné Malatíny, built around 1830, in its permanent exhibition. Nižné Malatíny is home to the wooden Kúria Jozefa Nemešániho a Jána Nemešániho from the 19th century, the Baroque masonry Kúria Jozefa Bukovinského a Zuzany Bukovinskej from the 18th century, the stone Kúria Márie Kohútovej, née Fehérpatakyová, from the mid-17th century, the wooden Neoclassical Kúria Rudolfa Andaházyho a Márie Andaházyovej from the 19th century, the masonry Kúria Zuzany Podhorányiovej, née Ošková, from the second half of the 19th century, the wooden Kúria Gejzu Oška a Petrolely Oškovej from the second half of the 17th century, and the wooden Kúria Emila Fehérpatakyho from the end of the 19th century.

Above Nižné Malatíny stands a masonry bell tower. During the First Czechoslovak Republic, weaving and basketry developed in Malatíny alongside agriculture. During the Slovak National Uprising, the Jegorov partisan unit was based in Malatíny.

Landscape

The central zone of Nižné Malatíny is designated as a historic landscape structure. The panoramic view of the Low Tatras is the most important visual feature of the surrounding landscape. The visual landscape around Nižné Malatíny includes forest vegetation, fields and meadows. Riparian vegetation along the Malatínka stream extends into the visual surroundings of Nižné Malatíny.

Roads and Cycling Route

Nižné Malatíny lies north of State Road I/18 and is connected to I/18 by Regional Road III/2345. The nearest railway station serving the municipality is located in the neighbouring municipality of Vlachy. It can be reached on foot or by bicycle in 3–5.5 km, or by car in 5.3–6.8 km, taking 6–8 minutes.

Route 9406 Partizánska Ľupča–Malatíny–Liptovská cyklomagistrála is a 5.1-kilometre-long, yellow-marked, easy MTB connection between Partizánska Ľupča and the Liptovská cyklomagistrála. It runs over asphalt, paved paths, forest roads and farm tracks.

Archaeological Finds

An Almgren 68-type bronze fibula from the early Roman Imperial period was found in Nižné Malatíny. In spring 1850, bronze objects were found on a hill in Nižné Malatíny. In 1927, a bronze object depicting a running lion on an arched frame was discovered on the property of the farmer Oško in Nižné Malatíny and donated to the Liptov Museum in Ružomberok.
