Discover Važec: holiday apartment between a cave and folk culture

Važec combines a natural monument, living traditions and visible traces of local history. In Važecká Cave, 235 m of the route are open to the public. The cave is one of Slovakia’s national natural monuments and is also an important palaeontological site for bones of the cave bear (Ursus spelaeus).

Nature

Važecká Cave thus represents a landscape where nature and geological history are directly connected. The section open to the public covers 235 m of the route; as a palaeontological site, the cave also preserves the connection to bones of the cave bear (Ursus spelaeus). Its classification as a Slovak national natural monument is likewise one of the defining facts about this place.

Culture and traditions

The Múzeum ľudovej kultúry Važec is located in one of the oldest masonry houses in Važec. It presents the everyday life and housing, traditional clothing, agricultural work, folk crafts, and the customs and traditions of the inhabitants of Važec. In the museum, a model shows what the village looked like before its destruction by fire. An exhibit from 1781 with its original decoration and the bride’s name can also be seen.

The local traditions include the Svätodušný chorovod Omilienci, an archaic ritual procession of dance and song held every Whit Sunday in Važec. Women who wear traditional dress and wish to sing can take part in the procession. Today’s procession begins at the upper end of Važec below the cemetery and ends in the square in front of the church with a performance and the symbolic opening of springs.

Historical traces

In the Church of Klaňania sa troch kráľov in Važec, a Gothic portal leads from the nave into the attached sacristy, which now serves as a confessional. It is said to have come from the former church of Šoldov. Another historic address is the House of Jan Hála: it is a national cultural monument, was built in 1923 and was the home of the painter Jan Hála when he came to Važec.

Getting oriented in the village

The German war cemetery near Važec lies outside the municipality between Važec and Tatranská Štrba. The entrance is signposted and leads to a large car park at the site. The site can be explored via a circular route through eight cemeteries. Thus, in addition to the cave, museum and traditions, memorial and commemorative sites are also part of the area’s distinctive character.

In the centre of Važec, a NabiBajk charging station for e-bikes is available in the car park in front of the local market, not far from the church.
