Holiday apartment in Malé Borové – Landscape, cycling routes and local history

Malé Borové lies on the southeastern slopes of Skorušina and in a basin in the headwaters of the Sviniarsky potok stream. The surrounding area features a challenging MTB/trekking loop, a junction of cycling routes, hiking trails to the water mills of Oblazy and a local history dating back to the 17th century.

Cycling and hiking trails

The challenging 35.4 km MTB/trekking loop “Cycling Route through the Choč Mountains” runs via Kvačany, Bukovina, Malatiná, Malé Borové and Oblazy before returning to Kvačany. The circuit connects several named places and passes through different sections of the route described. From Malé Borové, the route continues along the river through the narrow section of the Kvačianska Valley.

At the turnoff to Malé Borové there is a junction of cycling routes; this is where the Vrchárska cycle highway No. 042 begins. For hikes in the surrounding area, the water mills of Oblazy can be reached via hiking trails from Huty, Veľké Borové or Kvačany. All three named starting points are part of the route description, as is the mill destination itself.

History

The history of Borové dates back to the 17th century: the village originated at that time as a dispersed settlement established by Gorals from the Orava region. Borové is first mentioned in 1696. After 1786, Borové was divided into Malé Borové and Veľké Borové. The settlement of Novoť was incorporated into Malé Borové in 1882.

The development of the village is therefore characterized by an early dispersed settlement, its first written mention, the later division and the incorporation of Novoť. In this sequence, the names Malé Borové and Veľké Borové refer to the two villages that emerged from Borové after 1786.

Culture and crafts

Borové grew up in the area around an old glassworks. From the 18th century onward, itinerant glassmaking was also practiced in Borové. Since the founding of Borové, agriculture and alpine pasture farming have been among the inhabitants’ activities. The local history therefore encompasses both working with glass and the cultivation of fields and management of alpine pastures.

Historical local crafts included the production of sieves, shallow wooden bowls (Opálky), baskets and birch brooms. In Malé Borové, the Church of the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary was also blessed in 1952.
