Makov – Mountains, Nature and Holiday Apartments

Makov lies in a hilly to mountainous landscape. At 1,070 m, Veľký Javorník is the highest point in the municipality. The cadastral territory of Makov also includes the Veľký Javorník National Nature Reserve in the Javorníky Mountains at an elevation of 1,071 m.

Nature

Because of its preserved natural woodland, as well as its landscape and aesthetic values, Makov is part of the Kysuce Protected Landscape Area (CHKO Kysuce). One of the area's distinctive natural features is the U Papaji elm in Makov. It is considered the oldest and most impressive field elm in Central Europe and is nearly 500 years old. The Kysuca is also associated with the municipality: the source of the Kysuca River is not accessible to visitors.

Things to Do

The Makov Centrum–Bumbálka route is designated for mountain bikes. The green route is 9 km long and has an elevation difference of 450 m.

Another option is the “Ku prameňu Kysuce” educational trail. In Makov, it leads to a restored source of the Kysuca, where a rest area and four information panels have been installed. The educational trail is easy as a hike, although it includes a steeper ascent. It is 3 km long, with a total elevation gain of 194 m.

The winter sports facilities at Ski Makov include ski and snowboard rental, a ski service, and a ski school and ski kindergarten for beginners. Ski Makov has five easy to moderately difficult slopes at elevations of 660 to 948 m. Together, they have a total length of 6,000 m. The “Beskydsko-javornícka magistrála”, a 12 km-long ridge route along the border, also passes through the Javorníky Mountains.

Culture and History

The “PORAZISKO” information panel in Makov covers the history of the area in connection with the largest anti-Habsburg uprising in the former Kingdom of Hungary. It also addresses the burial of fallen Kuruc soldiers at this site. Another cultural and historical landmark is the Classicist Church of “Kostol sv. Petra a Pavla” in Makov, built in 1803.

Melocík can be reached by bus from Makov–Ústredie or from the Bytča bus station.
