Holiday apartment in Svrčinovec: Stations of the Cross, culture and Staré Šance

Svrčinovec particularly clearly showcases its connection between landscape, faith and history along the Stations of the Cross (Krížová cesta). It connects Stará dedina–Závršie, where the settlement of Svrčinovec began, with present-day Svrčinovec. Its route leads through the wooded landscape of the municipality, offers occasional views of the town centre and extends to the state border with the Czech Republic. Symbolically, the Stations of the Cross end in front of the entrance to the Chapel of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows on Závršie.

Culture

The Chapel of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows was converted from a former community school in Za vrchami. Every year, a pilgrimage and solemn Mass are traditionally held there on the feast day of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows. The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary is also part of the local history of sacred architecture: it dates from 1937 and was solemnly consecrated as a Roman Catholic church on 5 July 1945. Inside are a depiction of Our Lady of Lourdes and paintings of Saints Cyril and Methodius.

The U Katraka natural amphitheatre was built for various cultural and social activities and to promote Goral culture. In Svrčinovec, Goralské ostatky are still considered a living tradition. It brings the community together and preserves the cultural heritage of the Gorals and the partner municipality. On the fifth Sunday of Lent, FSk Svrčinka carried out Morena and symbolically bid farewell to winter.

History

A prominent historical site is Alte Schantze (Staré Šance), a historic site on the 634-metre-high summit of a rise in Svrčinovec. Together with Jablunkovské šance, Malé šance in Čierne, Valmi, the Šance fortifications in Koniaków and the site on Bukovec, Staré Šance formed a joint defensive system for protecting the Jablunkov Pass. The Čerňanka valley is also part of this historical context. Historically, it enabled safe passage through the Svrčinovec area to the Jablunkov Pass and the Czech Republic.

Routes and landscape

The routes around Svrčinovec connect wooded slopes, historical traces and paths near the border. A cross-country skiing route leads from the church in Svrčinovec over the ridge to the Studeničné chalet. The green-marked hiking trail runs north-west from Svrčinovec to the state border near the settlement of Dejovka and then continues through Moravia to Mosty u Jablunkova. The area around Staré Šance is considered suitable for cycling tourism.
