Holiday apartment in Čadca: nature, panoramic views and culture

Čadca combines unusual natural formations with viewpoints, signposted trails and a rich cultural history. Between stone spheres, mineral springs, cross-country skiing routes and exhibitions, different facets of a place in the Kysuce region come together.

Nature

Milošová-Megonky in Čadca is designated as a natural monument because of its rock or stone spheres and is considered a natural rarity in Europe. In the Megoňky locality in the Milošová district of Čadca, sandstone spheres with diameters of up to 3 metres can be found. Their occurrence was discovered in 1988 during stone extraction at the Padyšák quarry.

Megoňky can be reached by city bus no. 4 from Čadca to the Milošová terminus; from there, the path continues for about 300 metres on foot to the quarry. Another special feature is the Bukovský Spring: it is a weakly mineralised sulphur spring and can be reached on foot from Čadca city centre in about 20 minutes. A signposted hiking trail also leads to the sulphurous mineral springs in the valley of the Rieka stream.

Trails and views

The Briava lookout tower has been open to the public since 8 October 2025. From the summit, there are panoramic views of Čadca, the Javorníky Mountains, Kysuce and the Moravian-Silesian Beskids.

For winter sports, the main section of the Beskydsko-Javornícka cross-country skiing route is relevant. It runs from Makov Bumbálka on the border with the Czech Republic through the Vysoké Javorníky to the Čadca–Husárik locality and is about 54 kilometres long.

History and culture

In the centre of Čadca stands the Baroque Church of Saint Bartholomew. It was built in 1734 on the site of an older wooden church and is a national cultural monument.

The monument on Námestie slobody marks the site of the former vicarage. At the beginning of December 1848, representatives of the Slovak National Council and military leaders of the uprising were based there during the so-called winter campaign of the Slovak volunteers.

A commemorative plaque on a school building on A. Hlinku Street commemorates the work of a writer in the Kysuce region from 1924 to 1927.

Museum and regional traditions

The exhibition of the Kysucké múzeum in Čadca includes the Horelický Treasure, with a selection of 250 silver coins. The exhibition is complemented by multimedia devices, smart technologies and innovative elements. One of its most modern features is an interactive multimedia table. This brings historical objects and digital, interactive forms of interpretation together within the same museum exhibition.

The event culture is also connected with regional customs. Čadčiansky kotlík is a goulash-cooking competition that has already been held for the 13th time as part of the Jánsky Festival of Traditions. The festival also includes a craft market, creative workshops and demonstrations of traditional crafts. The competition combines goulash cooking with a programme that showcases regional craft traditions in different ways.
