Turzovka lies within the catchment area of the Kysuca River and combines a strong cultural tradition with diverse opportunities for active days. One of the town’s distinctive associations is the traditional wirecraft trade: Turzovka is one of its centres. In the town centre, this is commemorated by the bronze monument “Drotár a džarek” by Miroslav Cipár. The craft and the monument thus link a regional tradition with a specific commemorative site in the town centre.

Culture

The Roman Catholic Baroque Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Turzovka dates from 1759 and is listed as a national cultural monument. Another fixture in the cultural calendar is the traditional Beskydské slávnosti folklore festival, which takes place in Turzovka and has been held for more than five decades. The 53rd edition was described as one of the most important folklore events in the region. Turzovka therefore features both a historic church building and a folklore tradition held over many decades, representing different forms of cultural life.

The Turzovanka folklore group also preserves the regional heritage. For 23 years, it has maintained the songs and customs of Veľká Turzovka and Kysuce. Its connection therefore extends from the named locality of Veľká Turzovka to the wider cultural region of Kysuce.

Landscape

Živčáková is part of the Turzovská vrchovina and lies on the boundary of the cadastral territories of Turzovka, Korňa and Vysoká nad Kysucou. From Turzovka, it can be reached via two footpaths: one begins in Vyšný koniec and the other in Závodie. The two named starting points are therefore within the municipality of Turzovka and lead to the same destination. The ascent to Živčáková from Turzovka or Korňa takes about one hour. The time stated is expressly an approximate guide for these two starting points.

Since 2015, the Church of Panny Márie Matky Cirkvi has been part of the Živčáková pilgrimage site. It was solemnly consecrated on 4 October in the presence of bishops from Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Ukraine, as well as approximately 15,000 pilgrims. The countries named and the approximate number of participants form part of the contemporary historical context of this consecration.

A developed access road leads from Korňa to Živčáková. By car, parking spaces near the Church of Panny Márie Matky Cirkvi can be reached. The access road and parking spaces are expressly mentioned in connection with Korňa and the church.

Activities

The Areál športu a oddychu in Turzovka-Závodie has a year-round multi-purpose playing field covered by an air-supported dome, measuring 42 m × 22 m. Handball, volleyball, nohejbal, mini-football and tennis can be played there. During the summer months, pétanque, Russian skittles, tennis on clay courts, badminton, mini-golf and rides on a kick scooter or quad bike are also available. The offer therefore distinguishes between the indoor activities mentioned as available year-round and the additional options available during the summer months.

For winter sports, the Bukovina ski centre is located 2 km from the centre of Turzovka in the Kysuce region. It has two ski lifts measuring 500 m and 600 m in length. The slopes are suitable for beginners and advanced skiers, are groomed daily and include a lit slope that allows skiing in the evening. The two lift lengths, the slopes’ target groups and the evening lighting describe the different features of the ski centre.
