Vieska nad Blhom lies on the floodplain of the Blh River, in the middle of the Rimava Basin. The municipality comprises a deforested plain and hilly landscape with pronounced terraces, as well as a number of historical monuments. Vieska nad Blhom has been mentioned in written records under the name Wyfalu since 1427.

Landscape

The geological structure is also part of this landscape: The underlying rock consists of marl, claystone and sandstone, and is partly covered by river deposits and loess loam. The Molnár and Paláska mountains lie in the vicinity of Vieska nad Blhom. In the wider regional area are the Magin Hrad and Ragáč mountains.

Church and Bells

The Reformed church is the oldest monument in Vieska nad Blhom and was built in 1872. At the same time, its construction is associated with the year 1882 and the traditional Classicist style of the tolerance churches of the Gemer region. The tower of the Reformed church in Balogújfalu houses a bell cast in 1933. It commemorates Bodon Dénesné Balyó Ilonka, who died on 2 June 1907, and Bodon Gyula, who died on 2 September 1921. It was cast by bell founder Egry Ferenc; Dóri Balyó József and his wife Balyó Rozália commissioned it.

The tower of the Reformed church in Balogújfalu also houses the bell from 1894. Its inscription reads, in essence: “I call the living to prayer, announce the danger of fire and mourn the dead – UJFALU 1894.” Thus, the same tower contains a bell from 1894 and the bell cast in 1933, with its personal commemoration of two deceased people.

Gravestones and Memorials

A cemetery in Vieska nad Blhom contains the tomb of the Dóri Balyo family and Bodon Gyula. The tomb commemorates Bodon Gyula (1906–1921), who died at the age of 15. The Jewish burial site “Balogújfalusi zsidó sír” is also located in Vieska nad Blhom.

The Reformed church contains a memorial plaque commemorating those who fell in the First World War, dating from the 1930s. A second memorial plaque commemorating those who fell in the Second World War was installed in 2004 by the local Reformed association together with the municipal office of Vieska nad Blhom. A Turul statue was unveiled in front of the Reformed church in Balogújfalu in September 2017.
