Holiday apartment in Žíp: Cultural monuments and historic village character

Žíp combines the landscape of the Rimavská kotlina basin with a remarkable historic village character. The village lies on the left bank of the Blh River in gently undulating terrain that is also part of a predominantly flat landscape. In addition, there is a Reformed church, a wooden bell tower, a Neoclassical manor house and traditional houses whose architectural details reveal different eras.

Landscape

Žíp’s setting is defined by two elements: the Rimavská kotlina basin and the Blh River. Žíp lies on the river’s left bank. The terrain rises and falls gently without losing the character of a predominantly flat landscape. This combination of a riverside location and gently undulating terrain forms the geographical setting of the village and is just as much a part of its appearance as its historic buildings.

Culture

The Reformed church of Žíp is part of an ensemble comprising the church and bell tower, which is registered as a national cultural monument. The wooden bell tower stands directly beside the church. It has a shingle roof and dates from around 1750. Fragments of medieval wall paintings have been preserved in the Reformed church. They are located on the interior walls of the presbytery and on the triumphal arch.

Several distinct features therefore stand side by side in Žíp: the sacred architecture of the Reformed church, the wooden construction of the bell tower and the preserved medieval painting fragments inside the church. The bell tower is not only spatially associated with the church but, together with it, forms part of the registered ensemble.

Village character

To this day, Žíp preserves the characteristic layout of a clustered linear village. Its building stock includes masonry houses from the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Some of these houses retain arcaded galleries supported by columns on the courtyard side. Their façades also feature Late Neoclassical elements.

The village character therefore reflects not only a historic street structure but also various individual architectural details on the residential buildings. The period spanning the late 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century remains discernible in the masonry houses, as do the galleries on the courtyard sides and the Late Neoclassical façade elements.

History

Žíp’s historic building stock also includes a Neoclassical manor house with a park. The manor house and park of Žíp are jointly registered as a national cultural monument. The manor house is a two-storey, rectangular building with two wings. It stands in the middle of a park that was originally designed as a natural and landscape park.

The manor house and the adjoining park are currently in a dilapidated condition. Alongside the architectural form of the two-storey building, the original relationship between the manor house and the park therefore remains part of the historic village character.

Getting there

Žíp lies on the road between Rimavská Seč and Bátka. The village can be reached from the main road via a short detour. Žíp is also included in the Gotická cesta tourist route. The road location and inclusion in this route thus identify two different spatial connections of the village: the link between Rimavská Seč and Bátka and the course of a tourist route.
