Poproč is located in the southeastern part of the Slovak Ore Mountains, on ridges between the tributaries of the Blh. The terrain is hilly and lies at an elevation of approximately 525 to 570 metres. As a result, a clearly identifiable landscape meets a multifaceted local history here, dating back to the Middle Ages.

Landscape

The surroundings of Poproč include several prominent mountains. Šagulova is located near the village, as are Železník, Trstie and Sinec. These four names give the landscape its own geographical profile, without reducing Poproč itself to a single elevation. Together with the ridges and hilly terrain, they create a landscape shaped by varied terrain and the tributaries of the Blh.

History

Poproč was founded by an hereditary judge named Šebastián. In 1413, the village is documented under the names Felseő Poprocz and Also Poprocz. Its historical development reflects various economic periods: livestock farming and work as shepherds were among the livelihoods in Poproč. After 1918, the village's history was connected with miners who worked in magnesite mines.

Domestic work also preserves tangible traces of this past. Traditional crafts in Poproč included making wooden implements and shingles. In the first half of the 20th century, weaving hemp linen and rag rugs was also widespread. During the same period, wooden spoons and cooking spoons were made in home workshops. These activities represent an everyday culture in which wooden materials and textile work held a firm place.

Culture

The village has an evangelical church. Poproč also has a bell tower. Its traditional culture includes songs, lullabies and dances that have been preserved. Sacred buildings thus stand alongside traditions passed down orally or communally.

Getting around

Route 5601 is listed for cyclists. It is 11.0 km long, with 4.4 km running through Poproč. In addition, Poproč has a 2.5 km hiking route. Both figures make the village's different route formats concrete: the cycling route covers a longer stretch with a section through Poproč, while the hiking route is directly connected with the village.
