Holiday apartment in Čerenčany – Church, Curia and Village History

Čerenčany lies in the Rimava floodplain in the southern part of the Slovak Ore Mountains. The cadastral area is predominantly deforested, creating the landscape setting for a place whose distinctive traces are found above all in its history, buildings and traditional crafts.

History

Finds from the Hatvan culture, which is attributed to the Late Bronze Age, were discovered in Čerenčany. More recent forms of work and everyday life are also historically documented: pottery and cooperage were practised in Čerenčany. In the first half of the 20th century, linen and rag rugs were also woven. These various testimonies represent a local history in which craft activities and textile work are documented side by side.

Culture

The defining sacred building is the Evangelical church in Čerenčany. It is a Baroque-Classical building erected between 1826 and 1831 on the foundations of an older Toleration church. The church received its tower in 1861. The interior contains a Classical portal altar from the first half of the 19th century with a triangular tympanum and a painting of the twelve-year-old Jesus.

The curia is also part of the local architectural heritage. This Late Classical building with a historicist façade was erected in 1860. It is a single-storey block building on a rectangular floor plan with a two-storey central avant-corps. The historicist façades feature a pseudo-Romanesque arcaded frieze.

Samuel Kollár is buried in the local cemetery of Čerenčany. At the cemetery entrance stands a period cast-iron Empire-style pylon in the form of a square pillar, bearing Latin inscriptions about his life and work.

Events

The “Deň obce Čerenčany” was held in 2024 and 2025; an edition for 2026 has been announced. Attractions and competitions for children are planned for the announced “Deň obce Čerenčany 2026”. In 2025, the “Deň obce Čerenčany” also featured the “Čerenčiansky kotlík” cooking competition for cauldron specialities; this competition has been announced for 2026 as well.
