Discover Sútor: Holiday apartment between woodland and history

Sútor combines a predominantly wooded hilly landscape with a multifaceted local history. Between the Ťahan nature reserve, the Rimavská kotlina basin landscape and the village’s surviving traces, a concrete picture of this Slovak locality emerges.

Nature

The municipal area of Sútor is predominantly wooded and lies in a hilly landscape. The forests comprise oak-hornbeam stands with a beech component, as well as oak and pine forests. The Ťahan nature reserve forms a special protected area. It is located in the cadastral territory of Sútor, and its boundaries are identical to those of the Natura 2000 site SKUEV0363 Ťahan. At the same time, it extends across the cadastral territories of Sútor and Tomášovce. Protection level 5 applies in Zone A, and protection level 2 in Zone D. Habitats of European importance are protected: Pannonian oak-hornbeam forests (91G0) and oak-Turkey oak forests (91M0).

Location

Sútor lies in the Rimavská kotlina basin landscape, in the valley of a left-bank tributary of the Rimava. This geographical location describes the village as situated between the valley and the hilly landscape, complementing the picture created by the wooded areas within the municipal territory.

History

The first mention of Sútor dates from 1410. Initially, the village belonged to Blh Castle and later to the Muráň estate. The years 1566–1567 marked a profound turning point, when Turkish troops devastated Sútor. The local craft tradition has also been passed down: in 1828, residents of Sútor made pipes and brooms.

Culture

The oldest monument in Sútor is the Reformed church built in 1810. Architecturally, it is a hall church with a straight-ended design and a projecting tower. The Reformed church is a roofless ruin into which vegetation is gradually spreading. In 2018, a symbolic farewell service was held there. During the service, the bells in the tower rang for the last time before being removed and taken to the grounds of the Pauline monastery in Gombasek near Rožňava, which is undergoing renewal.

Traditions associated with Sútor are also preserved by the Slovak Hungarian Text Folklore Archive. It contains two folkloric texts: “A boszorkány halála” and “Mióta nincs Szútorban jó idő?”
