Nature and Landscape

Hodejovec lies among the hills of the Cerová vrchovina. Almost the entire cadastral area of Hodejovec lies within the Cerová vrchovina Protected Landscape Area. In addition, Hodejovec is part of the Cerová vrchovina a Rimavská kotlina Natura 2000 site.

The protected-area framework also includes the Cerová vrchovina – lesné biotopy site (SKUEV0357). It is a European site of community importance for forest habitats, covers 2,626.48 hectares and includes the cadastral area of Hodejovec. This makes the landscape tangible to you on several scales: from the village itself to the larger protected area. The protected areas differ in their designation and focus: landscape protection, a Natura 2000 site and forest habitat exist side by side.

The terrain consists of Tertiary sandstone; in the southwest, erosion has exposed remnants of lava flows. The southwest of Hodejovec is mainly home to remnants of oak forests and stands of black locust. Agricultural crops are grown across most of the cadastral area.

History

Hodejovec was first mentioned in writing in 1427; at that time, the village was called Keregede. For many years, Hodejovec belonged to the Hajnáčka estate. For a cultural and historical classification, the history of the name and the estate affiliation can be considered as separate traces.

Culture

The dominant landmark of Hodejovec is the Roman Catholic Church of Saint Martin the Bishop, originally built as a Baroque church in 1737.

In 1836, the church was rebuilt in the Neoclassical style. In 1927, it was renovated and its tower was heightened. Its architectural history thus extends from the original Baroque church through the Neoclassical rebuilding to the renovation with the heightened tower.

The building has a single nave and a straight altar end. Its presbytery is vaulted with a Bohemian vault. The church also has a renovated two-colour façade.

It is in very good condition and serves its religious purpose.

Hiking and Rural Surroundings

The 24-kilometre hiking trail from Hodejov railway station to Hajnáčka railway station runs for 1.81 kilometres through Hodejovec. You can read the two distances separately for planning purposes: one describes the entire connection, while the other refers to the section within the village.

The Hodejovec area is considered interesting for mushroom pickers. The area is also suitable for business activities in the field of agrotourism.
