Holiday apartment in Rimavské Janovce: Gothic Route and heritage conservation area

Rimavské Janovce is part of the tourist route known as the Gothic Route. The village is home to religious buildings and a heritage-protected town centre.

Culture

Notable secular buildings include the Törökovská kúria, a single-storey late Baroque building dating from 1800. Its rectangular floor plan, mansard roof and side pavilions define its characteristic form. A second kúria is located at house number 47. The late Neoclassical building is single-storey and has two wings; it also has a rectangular floor plan and a hipped roof. It dates from the second half of the 19th century.

The Church of St John the Baptist in Rimavské Janovce is a single-nave building dating from around the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries, with a semicircular apse. It is originally Romanesque and was formerly a Benedictine monastery church. The former Benedictine monastery stood on the north side of the church. Another historic religious site is the Reformed Church in Rimavské Janovce: it is originally Gothic and dates from the early 14th century. Its interior includes a wooden, flat coffered ceiling dating from 1792. The church is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose.

History

The historic centre of Rimavské Janovce was declared a heritage conservation area in 1994. Its linear street development forms a small central square where the Roman Catholic and Calvinist churches are located. Several houses within the heritage conservation area have preserved original stucco decorations dating from around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The history of the village is therefore evident not only in individual churches and kúrias, but also in the preserved structure of the built environment and in the details of historic house façades.

Water and cycling connections

A geothermal spring discovered in 2000 in the cadastral area of Rimavské Janovce is currently used in the Kurinec–Zelená voda recreational area. The Kurinec reservoir is a tourist attraction and is connected to Rimavské Janovce by a cycle path.

Transport connections

Rimavské Janovce is connected to Rimavská Sobota by road II/531 and a railway line for passenger and freight trains. In addition, the Močiar–Rimavské Janovce cycle route is planned. It is intended to run separately from the main road and thus not be exposed to danger from passenger cars and lorries. A length of 1,519.69 metres is planned. The route is to begin at a bridge in the Močiar settlement, run along an existing unpaved field path and the embankment on the Rimava River, and connect to the road at a level crossing in Rimavské Janovce.
