Discover Jesenské: Observation Tower, Hiking Trails and Holiday Apartment

Jesenské combines a new viewpoint with varied trails, protected natural areas and distinctive evidence of the town’s history. The 13-metre-high “Jeden strom” observation tower above Jesenské was completed in June 2025 and is fully open to the public. The tower offers a 360-degree view; in clear weather, the High Tatras can also be seen. An easy branch from the main trail leads to the observation tower, which is part of the hiking trail network in the Cerová vrchovina. The official trail to the observation tower leads over Širkovský hradný kopec. A 3.75-kilometre route from the centre of Jesenské to the observation tower runs through a valley and an area inhabited by European ground squirrels.

Nature

One third of Jesenské lies within the NATURA 2000 bird protection area “Vtáčie chránené územie”. The southwestern part of the cadastral area of Jesenské borders the Cerová vrchovina Protected Landscape Area. The Cifra Site of European Importance includes protection for the European ground squirrel. Entry by vehicle is prohibited there, while movement on foot is unrestricted. The different protected areas give the landscape around Jesenské clearly recognisable natural features.

On the Way

The blue hiking trail 2644 begins at Jesenské railway station and runs via Širkovce, Širkovský hrad, Gemerské Dechtáre, Senná and Ragáč. It is 18 kilometres long. The railway station is also connected with the history of the regional railway: the railway line through the valley of the Rimava River was put into operation on 5 September 1874. Cycling is also among the documented events in the town. On 1 May 2026, the ninth edition of the “Jarná cena Ceroviny” cycle race took place in Jesenské.

Culture

Jesenské is home to the Roman Catholic Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, originally a Baroque building dating from 1737. The church was damaged by fire in 1825. The Reformed Church in Jesenské was built in 1898 in the Neoclassical style on the site of an earlier medieval church. A kúria in Jesenské is listed in the Slovak heritage register under the number ÚZPF 970/1. Jesenské is home to the Neoclassical kúria “Jesenské - klasicistická kúria”.

The local history also includes a monument to the victims of the First and Second World Wars as well as the Jesenské cemetery. It contains wooden post graves with superstructures bearing symbols of local production from around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The traditional “Stavanie mája” event took place in front of the cultural centre in Jesenské on 30 April 2026. A small Ropík-37 reinforced-concrete bunker is located by a railway guard hut near Jesenské.

There are bilingual information and orientation boards in Slovak and Hungarian at nine locations in Jesenské. They are also intended to make it easier for tourists to find their way around the municipality. The Jesenské information centre sells tourist maps of Jesenské, the Rimavská Sobota District and the surrounding area, as well as a hiking map of the municipality’s cadastral area.
