Holiday apartment in Tisovec: Nature, culture and cog railway history

In Tisovec, a striking mountain made of limestone rocks, an educational trail leading to the Hradová ridge and the history of a unique cog railway come together. At 887 metres, Tisovská Hradová is a prominent landscape feature in the surroundings of Tisovec, an extensive mountain consisting of limestone rocks with numerous caves. Hradová is also a 127.47-hectare national nature reserve and part of the Tisovec Karst, a Natura 2000 site of European importance.

Nature and trails

The Hradová educational trail leads from the town of Tisovec along the southern slopes to the Hradová ridge. It has nine stations; the first information point is located next to the building of the secondary vocational school in Tisovec. The educational trail is intended exclusively for pedestrians. This keeps its route closely connected to the landscape of Hradová, whose limestone rocks and numerous caves shape the character of the extensive mountain.

Culture and railway history

The Tisovec Town Museum is located at two sites and offers three permanent exhibitions. One of them is housed in the birthplace of Vladimír Clementis. The exhibition there includes his personal belongings, pipes, awards, identity documents and books.

The Cog Railway Museum is located next to the railway station building in Tisovec. It presents the history of the Tisovec–Zbojská–Pohronská Polhora cog railway line and the story of its preservation. The line runs from Tisovec to Pohronská Polhora. The museum's exhibits include a model of a traffic office, original cog railway equipment, tunnel construction models, signalling equipment, a locomotive tachometer and railway uniforms.

The Cog Railway Museum is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on steam train operating days, during the steam train's stay at the station. Outside these days, visits are possible by prior arrangement, no later than one day in advance. This gives the railway history in Tisovec a clearly regulated schedule in addition to its exhibits.

Among Tisovec's designated historical sights is the Neoclassical town hall dating from 1796. A Neoclassical Protestant church from 1825 to 1832 is also included. In the Hámor district, there is also a Roman Catholic church built in the Empire style in 1845. The designated house of Štefan Marko Daxner dates from 1872.

Tisovec lies on the thematic route Gotická cesta, which runs from Spiš to Malohont. The route supplements the local historic buildings with a connection between these landscape regions that extends beyond the town.

Experience nature

Lesný skanzen Tisovec is a recreational area along the Voniaca nature educational trail. Visitors can spend their free time there and get to know the surrounding forests and their inhabitants in Muránska planina National Park.

Lesný skanzen includes a covered outdoor area that can, for example, be used as a reading room in nature. There are also interactive elements such as barefoot and other sensory trails, animal representations, nesting boxes, a children's playground, a pond with a bridge and a small climbing wall. The site thus combines various activities with observing nature and spending time outdoors.

The past of Hradová is also part of the local landscape: The castle on Tisovská Hradová consisted of two separate, independent fortifications.
