Gemerček is located in the western part of the Rimava Basin, in the valley of a tributary of the Rimava. The village combines a multifaceted history with sacred buildings, a Jewish cemetery and a route leading via Kurinec to Hodejov.

History

Gemerček was established around the 13th century and was mentioned from 1427 under the name Gwmory. The village’s history is also marked by violent upheavals: in 1554, Gemerček was devastated by the Turks, and in 1683 it was plundered by Polish-Lithuanian troops. The living conditions at that time can be described specifically for the year 1828: Gemerček then had 225 inhabitants living in 29 houses; they practised farming and fruit growing.

Culture

The Kostol sv. Alžbety Uhorskej in Gemerček is a branch church and a late Neoclassical church built between 1880 and 1883. One of the village’s smaller sacred buildings is the wayside chapel, a late Neoclassical structure dating from 1883. It has a square ground plan, a niche in the masonry gable and a façade articulated by pilasters.

The wayside chapel stands in the central part of Gemerček. It is in good condition and serves its religious purpose. Gemerček also has a similar instrument by Michal Kiszely.

The Jewish cemetery in Gemerček is open to everyone; there is no wall or gate. At its original location, the site preserves three limestone gravestones from the 19th century. The gravestones are flat and bear Hebrew inscriptions.

Trails

A route from Kurinec reaches Gemerček via the blue-marked hiking trail to below Ortváň and then along a field track. The Kurinec recreational area is designated as a point of interest along the route. The total elevation difference of the route is 200 m. From Gemerček, the route continues to Hodejov.

Hodejov is home to the ruins of a medieval castle, a manor house and a Neoclassical church.
