Culture and History

The church in Rimavská Seč is a stop on the Gotická cesta. The Gotická cesta was developed as a tourism product that connects the region’s Gothic churches through a shared route. The Church of the Conversion of Saint Paul is a Neoclassical church built in 1803 and renovated in 1896. It has a main altar with a large painting of the Conversion of Saint Paul from the early 19th century.

The church in Rimavská Seč is also an original Gothic building from 1457 with a preserved Gothic spatial layout, a straight-ended presbytery, and a vaulted ribbed cross vault. Its tower was added off-center on the north side in the 16th century, and a defensive wall surrounds the church. It stands in the central part of Rimavská Seč.

A historical reference dates back to 18 June 1450: on that day, Rimavská Seč was granted the right to hold annual markets twice a year, on 29 September, Michaelmas Day, and on Corpus Christi. The Jewish cemetery lies behind the Christian cemetery on Cintorinska Street. The Jewish section of the cemetery is no longer in use, but it is nevertheless well maintained; it contains 58 gravestones.

Nature

The Cerová vrchovina-Porimavie bird protection area extends south of Rimavská Seč. Rimavská Seč is listed among the cadastral areas of this bird protection area. The bird protection area lists, among others, Alcedo atthis, Bubo bubo, and Merops apiaster as protected bird species. Important bird habitats include stands of willows and alders along the riverbanks. The landscape of the Cerová vrchovina-Porimavie bird protection area also includes the medium-sized rivers Rimava and Slaná.

In the vicinity of Rimavská Seč, the 4.6 km-long Pieskovcové chrbty educational trail begins on the outskirts of Chrámec in the Okres Rimavská Sobota district. In the vicinity of Rimavská Seč, the educational trail passes through the Pieskovcové chrbty Site of European Importance, where the second and fourth levels of nature protection apply. The educational trail has five trilingual information panels covering the protected area, insects, relief, plants, and birds.
