Nature

The cadastral area of Hostice covers 2,112 hectares and lies largely within a protected landscape area. In the Cerová vrchovina Protected Landscape Area, wetland communities and riparian vegetation have developed in the upper sections of the small multipurpose water reservoirs, including Hostice Reservoir. These provide breeding grounds and a source of food for several species of waterbirds.

Hostice Reservoir is also one of the named landscape features of the village. It lies 2 km beyond the village in the direction of Jesenské. From Hostice, excursions into the landscape of the Cerová vrchovina volcanic mountains are possible. The reservoir is also used as a fishing area by anglers from the nearby area and farther afield.

On the way

Another connection to the Cerová vrchovina is represented by the traditional hiking event: it took place for the 49th time on 12 October 2024. The full-day hike followed a green-marked trail through the valley to Hostice. Together with the green-marked cycling route, this creates a local connection in which both a circuit around the mountains and a historically recurring hiking event are explicitly named.

Culture and history

At the heart of the village’s history is the Baroque Roman Catholic Church of St. Andrew the Apostle in Hostice, dating from 1787. In 1890, it was destroyed along with the entire village in a major fire. The church was restored between 1892 and 1913. Its architectural history therefore encompasses both its construction in the 18th century and its destruction and restoration at the turn of the 20th century.

The Putnoky family manor house is located in Hostice. One family manor house still stands there and is in very poor condition. In addition to this built heritage, the village also preserves designated examples of folk culture: the folk song “Ó ó farsang”, passed down in Hostice, also known as Gesztete, belongs to the adult folk songs for feast days. The folk singer Motyovszki Józsefné Kovács Teréz is also associated with Hostice, also known as Gesztete; her repertoire comprised more than 1,025 folk songs.
