CHA Beležír covers an area of 616,744 square metres. The cadastral area of Nová Bašta is also part of the Cerová vrchovina and Rimavská kotlina Natura 2000 protected area.

Nature

The mountains in the surrounding area, both nearby and farther afield, also form part of Nová Bašta’s geographical setting. Mount Geď lies near Nová Bašta, as does Mount Medves. Mount Ragáč lies in the vicinity of Nová Bašta; Mount Szilvás-kő is also located in the surrounding area.

History

Nová Bašta was first mentioned in writing in 1267. The former name Kostolná Bašta reflected Nová Bašta’s role as a parish centre for the surrounding area. A fortified church made Nová Bašta a defensive bastion for the surrounding area. The village is home to the Romanesque Roman Catholic Church of St. Stephen, dating from 1397 and rebuilt several times.

Culture

Local craft traditions included stonework and masonry. In addition to its local history and connection to the surrounding landscape, Nová Bašta is one of the municipalities in the Slovak part of the Novohrad-Nógrád UNESCO Global Geopark. Thus, ecclesiastical history, the village’s former functions, crafts and its inclusion in a cross-border-named geopark coexist in Nová Bašta.
