Holiday Apartment in Kociha: Cultural History and Trails

Kociha lies in the south of the Slovak Ore Mountains, in the Rimava Valley. Culture

The late Classicist Evangelical church is considered Kociha’s only cultural monument of historical significance. It was built in 1856 and restored around 1910. The roof and façade were reconstructed or repaired in 1995; in 2009, the drainage system and the interior were reconstructed and repaired. A small wooden bell tower stands next to the church. Designed in a folk style, the tower houses bells from 1899 and 1926, complementing the architectural history of the church complex with surviving details from different periods.

Kociha also has a memorial to the inhabitants murdered during the Slovak National Uprising. Seven inhabitants of Kociha were murdered during the Slovak National Uprising. The memorial site is therefore one of the testimonies of that period explicitly connected with the village.

History

Another historical connection leads to the Kocížská dolina valley. In 1787, there was a glassworks there producing hollow glass and painted glass. In the 1870s and 1880s, the two folk painters Anton Dostal and Ján Roháč worked in Kociha, producing large quantities of painted glass pictures. The historic municipal symbol also preserves a reference to the village’s history: it points to a local tradition of barrel-making. According to oral tradition, the name Kociha is said to derive from a woman named Kociha and a castle that is believed to have stood on Žiavec Hill.

Kociha has a mineral spring with earthy, iron-rich water. The municipal area also includes a forested area with game. Both features add natural and landscape-related aspects to the character of the village, which independently complement its historical heritage.

The SNP – Bojisko Rimavská Baňa educational trail also covers battles that took place in the cadastral area of Kociha. The Cesta SNP route passes through Kociha, connecting Rimavská Sobota and Rimavská Baňa. At Kociha’s Village Day in 2022, horseback riding was part of the accompanying programme.
