Studená lies in the southern part of the Cerová vrchovina, near the border with Hungary. Its location combines a clearly defined landscape with a history dating back to the Middle Ages. The Gortva watercourse also runs through the municipality: it reaches Studená and turns north-east again within the municipality.

Nature

The Gortva is 32.42 kilometres long in total. Its course through Studená is therefore one of the town's specific geographical features. The wider landscape context is also clearly defined: Studená is one of the Slovak municipalities within the Novohrad-Nógrád Geopark. Its volcanic structures can be used for educational purposes by the general public. Since 2016, the Novohrad-Nógrád Geopark has also been a national geopark of the Slovak Republic.

History

Studená was first mentioned in writing in 1304. The settlement was established after the Tatar invasion in the area of Nová Bašta. In the 15th century, Studená belonged to the estate of Somoskő Castle. Another historical turning point followed from 1554 to 1593, when Studená was occupied by the Ottomans.

The later local records also give the history a concrete scale: in 1828, Studená had a total of 39 houses. At that time, the inhabitants worked in agriculture. The name Studená was established in 1920, adding a much later linguistic milestone to the older written reference.

Culture

A special insight into everyday local life is provided by the House of Traditional Living in Studená. It contains an exhibition on folk culture and traditional living. The Museum of Traditional Living in Studená presents local crafts and life in the surrounding region.

The architectural cultural heritage also includes a chapel built in the 19th century and the Studená bell tower, the Gemersko-Malohontská zvonica. This bell tower has a bell dating from 1786. Together with the historical dates and information about earlier agricultural life, they create a picture in which everyday life, crafts and regional history stand closely side by side.
