Lukovištia combines the memory of Ivan Krasko with its location at Bankov and a local history that remains visible in memorial sites, architectural heritage, and traditional names. The Community Day is also one of the town’s traditional cultural reference points: At the 2024 Community Day, local lace-makers performed a piece featuring humorous episodes from the lives of Lukovištia’s residents. Lukovištia traditionally holds Community Day in July because this is Ivan Krasko’s birth month.

In the centre of the town stands the Evangelical Church of Lukovištia, a Baroque-Classical building dating from 1794 with a painted wooden coffered ceiling. Its furnishings include a wooden Baroque choir from the late 18th century and a Classical organ with richly polychrome-carved wooden decoration. The fully restored Evangelical Church stands in the centre of the town and continues to be used for its intended purpose.

History

The creation of Lukovištia was preceded in the 13th century by the mining colonisation of Malohont. Lukovištia later became a centre of tanning; the guild of tanners of Malohont existed there continuously from 1640 until the 1870s. Another historical trace reaches back to settlement by colonists from the old Republic of Genoa, present-day Liguria. In Lukovištia, this is reflected in traditional old Italian family names and in the names of fields, forests, and hills.

Nature

Lukovištia lies at the foot of the 438 m-high Bankov in the Revúcka vrchovina. The main road leads from the valley of Rimavská Baňa to Lukovištia and continues around Bankov to Drienčany and Teplý Vrch. The Teplý Vrch–Maginhrad cycle route also passes through the town. It runs along paved roads and field tracks in the pleasant shade of the surrounding forest.
