Bottovo – Reservoirs, Cycling Route and Local History

Culture and History

Bottovo was founded in 1926 in the cadastral areas of Dubovec, Cakov and Rimavská Seč. The settlement was founded by Slovaks from Orava and Pohronie as well as by Czech colonists from the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands. After the annexation to Hungary in 1938, the Slovak settlers had to leave Bottovo.

There is a monument to Ivan Krasko in Bottovo. A local monument also stands in the park in front of Bottovo’s cultural centre.

An ash tree grows on the grounds of the local primary school in Bottovo. It is the last surviving tree from an original group of 50 trees planted by local schoolchildren, and it was entered in the election for Tree of the Year.

An event in Bottovo included a small craft market and creative workshops; the workshops produced harvest wreaths, straw figures, gingerbread and bobbin lace.

The brown long-eared bat (Plecotus auritus) has been recorded at Bottovo Reservoir.

Routes

Route 3 begins at the Kurinec recreational centre near Rimavská Sobota and runs via Hodejov, Bottovo and the Číž spa to the Teplý vrch recreational centre. From Hodejov, the route heads towards Bottovo and to mineral springs and bodies of water in the region.

A cycling tour from Rimavská Sobota via Pavlovce, Bottovo Reservoir and Martinová Reservoir is described as a 34-kilometre round trip.
