Holiday apartment in Rimavská Baňa: Gotická cesta and Sinec
Rimavská Baňa combines remarkable sacred architecture with historical trails and tourist routes through the surrounding landscape. Above the village stands an early Gothic single-nave church built around 1300 and surrounded by a Renaissance defensive wall.
Culture and history
Rimavská Baňa lies along the Gotická cesta thematic route. It connects medieval churches with rare wall paintings, including the 13th-century Gothic church in Rimavská Baňa. Together with 11 other sacred monuments in the Gemer-Malohont region, the church is one of the holders of the European Heritage Label. Inside the church in Rimavská Baňa are medieval wall paintings from the 14th century depicting the so-called Legend of Saint Ladislaus. There is also a painted coffered ceiling dating from 1783.
The SNP – Bojisko Rimavská Baňa educational trail also conveys the area’s history. It commemorates the fighting that took place there at the end of 1944 between insurgents and German units advancing from the south in the direction of Rimavská Sobota. Sacred art and the events of the 20th century thus stand side by side at different stations in the same locality.
Trails and landscape
The SNP – Bojisko Rimavská Baňa educational trail is approximately 4.5 kilometres long. It begins at educational panel point 1 by the SNP monument below the church, follows a circular route through neighbouring Rimavské Zalužany and over the Hrb elevation with educational panel 5, and then returns to Rimavská Baňa. Tourist trails also lead from Rimavská Baňa to Sinec and into the Stolické vrchy mountains.
Another prominent landmark is the Vŕšok observation tower, which stands approximately 1 kilometre north of Rimavská Baňa. The route to the observation tower involves about 120 metres of elevation gain and takes less than 20 minutes. From there, views open out over the Rimava Valley, westwards to Lehota nad Rimavicou, northwards to Mount Tŕstie above Tisovec, and southwards as far as Hungary.
