Holiday apartment in Drňa: bee-eater, sandstone relief and culture

At the “Pieskovňa pre včeláriky” site, you can observe the nesting burrows of the protected European bee-eater (Merops apiaster). The bird arrives there from the end of April to the beginning of May.

Nature

The “Pieskovňa pre včeláriky” site is located in a former sand pit near Drňa. It is part of the Cerová vrchovina Protected Landscape Area and the Cerová vrchovina–Porimavie Special Protection Area. The former sand pit and its current inclusion in two protected areas give the site a clearly identifiable connection with nature.

Another geological feature is the Jalovské vrstvy. They are a type locality for Lower Miocene marine sandstone-conglomerate strata. Due to selective weathering, more resistant sandstone beds emerge at the Jalovské vrstvy. These sandstone beds form a visually impressive landscape relief and make the geological structure visible in the terrain itself.

The Pieskovcové chrbty area (SKUEV 0362) lies in the eastern part of the Cerová vrchovina mountain range between Drňa and Chrámec. This area designation includes thermophilic plant and animal species, grassland biotopes, stands of common juniper and thermophilic shrubs. Thus, alongside the individual sites, clearly defined natural and landscape designations are also central.

Bus transport in Drňa is operated by SAD Lučenec a.s. and connects the municipality directly with all surrounding settlements as well as the district town. The connection therefore names both the surrounding settlements and the district town as direct destinations of the local bus service.

Culture

Drňa has been documented in written records since 1246 and developed on an older settlement. The history of the place therefore reaches back to a time when the present settlement structure did not yet exist. An important building is the Reformed Church in Drňa. It is a Neoclassical church with Baroque-influenced elements and was built in 1802 by the master builder J. Fischer from Rimavská Sobota.

The Reformed Church in Drňa was rebuilt from 1835 to 1840. Its interior is vaulted with three bays of a Bohemian Platzel vault. The building history thus combines its construction in 1802, the subsequent five-year rebuilding period and the special design of the church interior.
