Teplý Vrch: Reservoir, Nature Trails and Culture

Teplý Vrch can be discovered through water, nature and history all at once. The reservoir, themed nature trails and Protestant church offer different ways of experiencing this place.

Water and Nature

The Teplý Vrch Reservoir offers opportunities for water sports. The Ormet facility is located on its sunny side. Waterfowl can be observed at the reservoir from a wooden observation point.

The northeastern edge of the protected Hikóriový porast area lies in the immediate vicinity of the Teplý Vrch Reservoir. At the end of the 19th century, 50 hickory trees from five species were planted in Hikóriový porast: Carya ovata, Carya glabra, Carya lacinosa, Carya alba and Carya cordiformis. The trees adapted well to the local conditions and regenerate naturally.

Nature Trails

The Zvernica Teplý Vrch nature trail is a self-guided walking route focusing on hunting, natural history and historical topics. It provides information about the history of Slovakia’s oldest game enclosure, the keeping of fallow deer and mouflons, and the flora and fauna of the Teplý Vrch game enclosure.

The route begins and ends at the Lujza hut in the game enclosure. Prior arrangements are required to visit the nature trail; it is not open to the public during the winter months. From an observation tower, visitors can observe living mouflons and fallow deer under the protection of the foresters.

The Drienčanský kras nature trail begins in Teplý Vrch, is 7.5 km long in total and passes through the protected Hikóriový porast area. It includes 15 stops with information panels about the karst’s characteristic natural features. The different topics and the stated route length provide a neutral basis for comparing the two nature trails.

Culture and History

The Protestant church in Teplý Vrch is a Neoclassical building with Baroque elements dating from 1827. Its altar was created around 1640 in the traditional Mannerist style of Protestant altars. The altar comes from an earlier wooden church mentioned in 1754. In the Central Register of the Slovak Monument Fund, the Protestant church is listed under number 1 028/1.

The Gotická cesta forms part of the gemersko-rimavský okruh and passes through the municipalities of Kraskovo and Kyjatice in the Teplý Vrch microregion. The creative workshops “Muzičky a Malí tanečníci” offer another cultural aspect: they are taking place again and have a tradition spanning more than 25 years.
