Holiday apartment in Hnúšťa: Mining history, culture and landscape

Hnúšťa combines impressive evidence of its mining history with Neoclassical architecture, exceptional works of art and a distinctive landscape. The town lies in a basin at the foot of the Stolické vrchy mountain range, bordered by the elevations of Sinec, Ostrá, Štepov vrch, Brandzová and Brezina. In the town centre, the Klenovská and Tisovská Rimava rivers join to form the Rimava.

Culture and history

The Hnúšťa Mining Museum presents the mining history of the town and region and includes access to an unused area of a mine that is still in operation. A museum visit includes brief access to underground areas of the mine, where visitors cover a distance of 600 metres. Alongside the historical information, this also provides a tangible insight into the underground areas of the mine.

Notable works of art and architecture include the “Detvanec” sgraffito by Vojtech Stašík from 1957, which is considered the largest sgraffito in Slovakia. The Petrivaldský Villa is a two-storey Neoclassical building dating from around 1830. Since 1998, it has been listed as a national cultural monument under number 11262. The villa houses an interactive exhibition about Janko Francisci-Rimavský and Matej Hrebenda, as well as an exhibition on the development of the book.

The exhibition in the Petrivaldský Villa is open on weekdays. At weekends, visits are possible only by prior arrangement and subject to the availability of a guide. The religious buildings also span different periods: the Neoclassical Protestant church dates from 1808 and stands on the site of an older church with a cemetery dating from the early 14th century. The Neoclassical Roman Catholic church was built in 1802; the first chapel was built as early as 1788.

The Mašiansky Bridge is located in the Maša district and is one of two surviving single-arch stone bridges dating from around 1765. The historic bridge is covered by a newer structure. Thus, Hnúšťa brings together large-scale art, protected historic architecture, church architecture and evidence of transport history.

Landscape and activities

The town’s spatial setting is shaped by its location in the basin and at the foot of the Stolické vrchy. A section of the Márie Széchy educational trail in the cadastral area of Hnúšťa follows the historic road between Fiľakovo and Muráň castles dating from 1644. The town established this section of the educational trail in 2021.

The outdoor swimming pool represents another active side of Hnúšťa. It has a 25-metre swimming pool with a depth of 1 to 1.8 metres, as well as a 10 × 10-metre children’s pool with a small slide. The Hnúšťa Tourist Information Centre also rents out two electric bicycles, three cross bikes and a bicycle trailer for children. Helmets and reflective equipment are also available for the rented bicycles.

The Tourist Information Centre offers reservations for the town’s museums, information about cultural, social and tourist activities in Hnúšťa and the surrounding area, as well as tips for hiking and cycling tours.
