Petrovce – Holiday Apartment Between Nature and History

Petrovce is located in the Cerová vrchovina mountains at the source of the Mačací potok stream.

Hiking

The yellow-marked hiking trail no. 8495 begins in Petrovce and leads for 4.6 km to border crossing IX/19 between Slovakia and Hungary.

History

Petrovce lies on the historic border of the Novohrad, Gemer and Borsod counties. Its history also reaches far back archaeologically: numerous finds from the Neolithic and Bronze Age have been discovered in Petrovce. The settlement history of Petrovce began with the settlement of Sáros, founded by the Sárosi family. Nobles from Sáros founded Kissáros and Péterfala before the entire population of Sáros later moved to Petri. The local history therefore includes several settlement names and a sequence ranging from early finds to later relocations of the settlement.

Culture

Until the 1940s, a Romanesque church dedicated to the Holy Trinity, dating from the second quarter of the 13th century, stood near Petrovce. The Trinity Church in Petrovce was built in 1929–1930. It was inspired by Cubism and the tectonics of Romanesque buildings. The church is in good condition and serves its religious purpose. In Petrovce, the memory of a Romanesque church is thus combined with a later sacred building whose design explicitly refers to Cubist and Romanesque forms.

Nature

Fenek is a 3.98-hectare wetland in the Cerová vrchovina mountains that has been protected since 1993 and is also a rare surviving wetland habitat. Endangered plant species include prilbovka dlholistá and prilbovka biela. Rare snail species and aquatic insects are also found there. The designation as a wetland habitat therefore encompasses both the protected area and the rare and endangered species mentioned there.

Water

The 63-hectare VN Petrovce water reservoir is located near Gemerský Jablonec and Petrovce. It is managed as a carp fishery, and fishing is restricted. Its size, location, type of water body and the applicable fishing restriction together form the described characteristics of VN Petrovce.
