Holiday apartment in Babinec – Church, Crafts and Landscape
Babinec is located in the southeastern part of the Slovak Ore Mountains, on a flat ridge between the Rimava Valley and the Papča stream. The topics that present the village in its various facets range from the landscape to flax processing and the Protestant church with its bell tower.
Landscape
The area around Babínec is deforested; there is an oak forest in the northern part. Thus, open areas of landscape and dense woodland in the north exist side by side within the same area. The location on the ridge between the Rimava Valley and the Papča stream provides the geographical setting for the village.
Culture
Flax processing was one of the oldest occupations of the inhabitants of Babínec, especially the women. There was also a tradition of linen weaving and making rag rugs. In the first half of the 20th century, spindles, weaving heddles and chests made of split beech wood were produced at home. The chests were used to store clothing and grain. The museum exhibition “Od ľanu k plátnu” introduces visitors to the tools that the ancestors of Babínec’s inhabitants used to process flax for making linen.
The Protestant church of Babínec is a Neoclassical church building dating from the late 18th century. Its nave has a flat wooden coffered ceiling with late Renaissance–Baroque rustic ornamentation featuring stylized flowers and leaves, transferred from an older building. The organ dates from 1739 and has a three-part case with Baroque acanthus ornamentation. The bell tower of Babínec is also a Neoclassical building from the late 18th century, complemented by late Baroque elements. Its bell was cast in 1813 by B. Stephanides of Lučenec. The cultural and social event “Stretneme sa pod Turničkou” is regularly held at the bell tower.
