Holiday apartment in Hodejov – castle ruins, bronze treasure and mountains
Hodejov combines a Gothic castle ruin of archaeological significance with an eventful local history and a landscape of hills and mountains. Hodejovský hrad is a Gothic castle ruin of archaeological significance, whose construction is dated to before 1244. This is where the town’s historical traces begin, on the castle hill, but they also continue through buildings, finds and regional trails.
Culture
A castle was built on the hill above Hodejov in the second half of the 13th century. Hodejov Castle withstood attacks by the Hussites and Ottomans, but was conquered and devastated in 1574 after several attempts. Today, only slight remains of the foundation walls survive. The small Chapel of Saint Anne also stands on the castle hill.
Personalities and former uses are also part of the traces left by the town. Sándor Petőfi stayed in Hodejov in 1846 and 1847. Iron baths operated here in the 19th century; a steam mill was also in operation in Hodejov during this century. These two facilities represent different aspects of the town’s history at that time.
The townscape includes a manor house and a Neoclassical church. The manor house is a Late Neoclassical building from 1865, designed by the Hungarian architect Miklós Ybl. Hodejov’s archaeological significance is also reflected in the Hodejov bronze treasure, which is among the finest and scientifically most valuable finds in Slovakia. In 1961 and 1962, a total of 361 artefacts were collected in Hodejov, each of which has its own historical significance.
Landscape
The western part of Hodejov is crossed by the Cerová vrchovina hill region; the Gortva stream flows through this landscape. Mount Bik is located in the vicinity of Hodejov. The wider regional surroundings also include the mountains of Paláska and Magin Hrad. Thus, the landscape designation extends from the immediate surroundings of the town to the wider regional area.
Trails
Hodejov is the starting point of a green-marked hiking trail leading to Steblová skala, to Mount Ragáč, located in the vicinity of Hodejov, and to Hajnáčka. Regional Route 2 runs from Blhovce via Hodejov to Jesenské. Mineral spring water can be drunk in Hodejov on a regional tourist route.
The traditional annual cycle of local events includes the hunting celebrations of Saint Hubert, held every year in Hodejov. Alongside the historic buildings and archaeological traces, regional trails, spring water and a traditional festival thus emerge as independent features of the town.
