Holiday apartment in Kyjatice – church, wooden toys and the Gotická cesta
Culture
The Evangelical church in Kyjatice dates from the late 13th or early 14th century. Its fresco decoration was created in two phases: at the end of the 14th century in the presbytery and on the triumphal arch, and in the first half of the 15th century on the north wall of the nave. A Renaissance wooden coffered ceiling with floral ornaments from 1637 completes the furnishings. The construction period, wall paintings and wooden ceiling therefore relate to different periods within the same church building.
Another cultural feature of the village is the traditional Kyjatické hračky. These included wooden horses on wheels with carts, wheelbarrows, cradles, children's beds and various animal figures. The Kyjatické hračky were added to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Slovakia on 19 December 2022. Ladislav Hedvigi makes toys from beech wood using original technological methods without metal connecting elements. Thus, in Kyjatice, traditional forms of wooden toys meet a craft production that explicitly relies on original methods and beech wood.
History
An archaeological culture was identified above Kyjatice and was named after the village because of the intensity and quantity of the finds. The Kyjatice culture is dated approximately to the period from 1100 to 700 BC. The place name therefore also has an archaeological context whose time frame clearly predates the construction of the Evangelical church.
