Klenovec stretches along both banks of the Klenovská Rimava. The Klenovský Vepor National Nature Reserve is located within the cadastral area of Klenovec. It protects preserved original mixed Carpathian forests with primeval-forest-like stands. The important and well-known “Rudná magistrála” hiking trail runs across Klenovský Vepor. Thus, Klenovec brings together a riverside landscape, protected Carpathian forests and a well-known hiking route.

Nature and activities

The higher elevations are also part of the local landscape. Extensive meadows in valleys and on mountain peaks, together with wooded slopes reaching elevations of up to 1,300 m, create suitable conditions for paragliding in Klenovec. A paragliding school licensed on the basis of an authorization from LAA SR offers several courses for beginners and advanced pilots throughout the year. In addition, one round of the Slovak Cup series or a Slovak paragliding championship is held in Klenovec every year.

Culture and history

The Klenovská Rontouka folklore festival was established in 1979. Klenovská Rontouka includes traditional farmsteads with creative workshops for crafts, music, singing and dancing, as well as a traditional folk crafts fair. Klenovec is also home to a Classicist Evangelical church with a separate bell tower dating from 1787. There is also a 20th-century prayer house of the Baptist Brotherhood.

In the 1970s and 1980s, 36 families in Klenovec were engaged in the Guba weaving craft. To this day, Ján Fotta is the only Guba weaver in Klenovec. The local Jánošík tradition includes the account that Juraj Jánošík was captured in Klenovec by Liptov haiduks in 1713.

Klenovecký syrec is made from sheep’s milk and has a protected designation of origin.

Klenovec can be reached via State Road II/526, which connects Hnúšťa with Kokava nad Rimavicou. Several bus connections are available for the journey.
