Discover Španie Pole: Karst, Culture and Holiday Apartments

Španie Pole is connected with the Drienčanský Karst, a karst area in the Revúcka vrchovina, west of the Slovak Karst and south of Muránska planina. The Drienčanský Karst extends between Drienčany, Hrušovo, Striežovce, Španie Pole, Hostišovce and Budikovany. This area includes 190 sinkholes and 42 caves.

Culture and Crafts

Traditional crafts in Španie Pole included lime burning. In the first half of the 20th century, the village was known for processing and selling beeswax. Spindles and brdá were also made here as home-based work and sold by peddlers in other regions. Brdárstvo was a seasonal winter sideline often associated with processing beeswax and making and selling other wooden implements.

Evangelical Church

The Evangelical church in Španie Pole was built from 1805 to 1810 and restored in 1931. Its structure consists of a hall with a segmental termination and an attached tower at the front. Inside, the church preserves a wooden gallery on carved columns dating from the time of construction.

Caves and Karst Features

Opal mineralization was identified in the stalactites of the upper level of Španopoľská jaskyňa cave. Archaeological finds were discovered there in 1988, including fragments of the Kyjatice culture. The karst landscape includes blind valleys, marginal karst depressions and karst lakes.

Educational Trails and Routes

The Drienčanský Karst educational trail is 7,540 metres long and passes through easy terrain. It extends between Drienčany, Hrušovo, Striežovce, Španie Pole, Hostišovce and Budikovany. At its stations, visitors can learn about caves, karst lakes, karren and karst depressions or sinkholes.

The 15-kilometre Budikovany–Chvalová hiking trail passes through the Drienčanský Karst and continues to Španie Pole. Near the section between Španie Pole and Chvalová, a preserved lime kiln stands along this hiking trail. For a cycling route, the surface is specified as 70 percent asphalt and 30 percent forest path.
