Holiday apartment in Sebechleby – Stará Hora and culture

Stará Hora is a folk architecture reserve and part of Sebechleby. The settlement has approximately 130 wine-growing houses and wine cellars, 87 of which are classified as national cultural monuments. The protected folk architecture includes one- and two-room vintners’ houses with columned arcades and cellars carved into tuff stone. In Stará Hora, historic buildings, wine-growing and traditional architectural forms stand side by side.

Culture

The Baroque Chapel of St. Urban in Stará Hora was built in 1732. The Sebechleby–Stará Hora Ethnographic Museum is also part of the Stará Hora folk architecture reserve. It presents traditional costumes, folk traditions and customs passed down through generations. The idea for the small museum emerged in 2003 as a representation of Sebechleby’s former way of life and traditions.

Sebechleby is also home to the Church of St. Michael, with the object identification number 1112/1. It is classified as Baroque sacred architecture. Its interior is single-nave and has a polygonal-ended presbytery. The presbytery windows preserve Gothic tracery from the 15th century; the church also houses a Neoclassical organ from 1898.

Experiences

Oberačka po sebechlebsky is a festival of wine-growing, traditional folk gastronomy, tourism and entertainment. The programme of Oberačka po Sebechlebsky 2025 included a tour of tuff-stone cellars as well as tastings of varietal wines and burčiak. The original wine cellars in Stará Hora can be visited. A visit to the St. Urban Cellar includes a tasting of local wine together with a speciality of the traditional cuisine.

The Geľovianka folk group is dedicated to the customs, songs, dances and costumes of Sebechleby and the Hont region. Its repertoire includes grape processing and work in the vineyard. Together with the municipality and the local association, Geľovianka organizes the Svätourbanské slávnosti in Stará Hora every year on the feast day of the patron saint of wine-growing, St. Urban.

The tourist information office in Stará Hora offers visitors information and guided-tour services in July and August. It can arrange tastings as well as tours of the museum or the folk architecture reserve.

Landscape

Sebechleby is located on the Krupinská planina. On June 29, 2024, a sports day in the Stará Hora folk architecture reserve concluded with the lighting of the Jánska vatra bonfire.
