Landscape

Trpín combines a long written record with a landscape characterized by valleys, flat ridges and hilly terrain. The village lies on the Krupinská výšina in a flat valley of the Trpín stream. This stream is a tributary of the Litavica. The cadastral area includes flat ridges with hilly terrain, cut through by the valley of the Trpín and its tributaries. As a result, flatter ridges and incised valley areas alternate within the cadastral area. The cadastral area is largely deforested; forests are found only on the slopes of the Slatina valley. The landscape therefore remains closely connected to the valleys mentioned and their slopes.

Anyone looking at Trpín on a map will not find an exclusively forested area, but rather a landscape with open spaces and individual wooded sections on the slopes. The combination of its location on the Krupinská výšina, the course of the Trpín stream and its tributaries illustrates the spatial character of the village particularly well.

History

Trpín is one of the oldest communities in Hont documented in writing. The first surviving written document dates from 1135 and names the place as Terpen. Another important period extends from 1262 to 1848: during this time, Trpín belonged to the estates of Bzovík Monastery. The two details mark different aspects of the village’s history – its early written mention and its later affiliation with a specific ecclesiastical estate.

Smaller artefacts also preserve historical references in the village. A carved wayside cross with a folk ornament dates from 1826. Historically, lace-making for the region’s traditional costume was also widespread in Trpín. This craft tradition forms part of the village’s inherited everyday and cultural history.

Culture

A prominent religious building is the Roman Catholic Chapel of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, built in 1889. The chapel is a single-nave religious building with a segmental-ended apse and a flat ceiling. It contains a polychrome carved cross from the late 19th century. Thus, its construction date, basic form and an associated furnishing from the same historical period have all been preserved.

A small bell tower stands in the centre of Trpín. The village also has a wayside statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. Together with the chapel, the carved wayside cross and the memory of lace-making, these features create a picture in which small religious monuments, craft traditions and the documented history stand side by side.
