Holiday apartment in Litava – Culture, Calvary Hill and the Litavský Sausage Festival
Culture
The Roman Catholic church in Litava, dedicated to Saint Margaret of Antioch, stands partly on the foundations of a Romanesque chapel; a Gothic section was built on these foundations between 1320 and 1340. Its furnishings include a Gothic stone baptismal font from the 14th century with a Baroque wooden cover from the 18th century. The church also contains a late Baroque altarpiece of Saint Margaret, an oil painting on canvas dating from the end of the 18th century. The church interior thus brings together the memory of a Romanesque chapel, Gothic architectural history and later Baroque furnishings. The sequence of foundations, structural elements and furnishings reveals a layering of different periods. The Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque elements do not represent a single construction phase, but rather components of the church interior created one after another. The baptismal font and the altarpiece add two independent examples of sacred design from different centuries to the architectural history.
Further sacred landmarks can be found in several places around the village. The Calvary Hill ensemble in Litava was built in 1807 in the vernacular Baroque style. A stone statue of Saint John of Nepomuk stands in the centre of Litava. Wooden crosses stand on Skalica and in the cemetery in Litava.
Cuisine
The Litavský Sausage Festival has been held regularly since 2013. Visitors can sample lamb, game and pork goulash as well as fried sausage there. The festival also offers traditional and unconventional handicrafts, spices, toys and sweets. Culinary and craft products are presented side by side as part of the same event, so the offerings are not limited to food. The festival therefore includes both a variety of savoury dishes and goods and products from different areas of everyday life.
