Holiday apartment in Sudince: church, viticulture and the Súdovská route

Sudince combines architectural heritage, traditional working methods and viticultural history with a landscape at the transition between two Slovak regions. The village preserves various traces of its development: historic place names, a surviving street settlement, traditional buildings and restored facilities once used for processing hemp. Sudince is also part of a cycling route between the Berený háj viewpoint and Lišov.

Culture

The villagescape is shaped by a surviving street settlement with folk houses. Farmsteads, homes and small cottages display typical elements of Carpathian folk architecture. House No. 29 has also survived from an earlier development of 19th-century stone houses in the Hont type.

A prominent building is the Evangelical church of Sudince. The single-nave Late Classicist building dates from 1858. Its presbytery has a segmental termination, while the tower is integrated into the building mass. On the façade, a risalit framed by pilasters, with a triangular gable and tympanum, dominates the view. Above the portal is a semicircular thermal window.

History

Sudince has been documented since 1245 under the name Zyud. Later forms of the name were Usud in 1263, Wsudy in 1387 and Sudince in 1773. The village’s historic livelihoods included agriculture, livestock farming and viticulture.

A special reminder of former working methods is provided by the Sudinské močidlá. Until around 1952, three stone-carved vats were used to ret hemp from the village and its surroundings with water from a warm spring for the production of woven textiles. The restored Sudinské močidlá are considered a sight of Sudince and remind residents and visitors of customs of their ancestors that have disappeared.

Landscape

Sudince lies in the valley of the Lišovský potok and at the transition between the Ipeľská pahorkatina and the Krupinská vrchovina. The local natural features include a linden tree around 500 years old, which visitors can see in Sudince.

Viticulture

In the direction of the church, there is a lane with wine cellars and cottages. Sudince is also one of the 13 wine-growing municipalities of the Hontiansky wine-growing district. Thus, the village’s historic livelihoods stand alongside architectural evidence that makes the settlement’s rural character visible.

Cycling route

The Súdovská route passes through Sudince between the Berený háj viewpoint and Lišov. Cyclists turn right to visit Sudince. The village ends after about one kilometre; they return to continue along the marked route. The route runs over asphalt as well as unpaved forest and field paths and is intended for a cross bike.
