Holiday apartment in Žibritov between natural monuments and vineyards

Žibritov combines protected nature, marked trails, historic buildings and regional wine traditions. Particularly impressive are the andesite formations in the surrounding area, while the educational trail through the Bebrava Valley and the preserved evidence of the village’s history bring together the different facets of the place.

Nature and trails

Near Žibritov, close to Krupinské bralce, lies the protected Sixova stráň natural monument. It features a rare columnar jointing formation of pyroxene andesite: the five- and six-sided columns are bent into hook shapes at their upper ends. The also-protected Krupinské bralce natural monument consists of a series of andesite columns with an adjoining scree slope.

The Žibritovský náučný chodník educational trail begins at the tourist trail junction in Žibritov and leads downhill through the Bebrava Valley to Štangarígeľ. In summer, the trail cannot be walked along its entire length because of the fencing around grazing areas beyond station 2. From Žibritov, the blue-marked trail leads to the memorial for the forester Ing. Albert Macko below Buzalkový vrch. It is 1.6 kilometres long and has an elevation gain of 160 metres. Ing. Albert Macko lived from 1951 to 2010.

Signposted cycle routes are also part of the local trail network. These include the yellow-marked Sv. Anton–Žibritov route. Another route is 27.6 kilometres long and leads from Krupina via Štangarígeľ to Žibritov. It runs mainly along paved forest roads and is marked with green cycling signs. There is also a small pond near Žibritov that is suitable for a short break.

Culture and history

The village character includes a preserved ensemble of traditional vernacular, masonry, single-storey houses with several rooms and rectangular floor plans. Several of these houses are listed as heritage sites. The location also has a connection to film history: exterior shots for the first Slovak-Hungarian co-production film, “Dáždnik svätého Petra”, were filmed in Žibritov and its surroundings in 1958.

A cylindrical bastion from Žibritov’s fortified medieval Church of Saint Ladislaus has been preserved. It was later used as a bell tower. The Evangelical Church in Žibritov is a Classicist building from 1838, with its tower added later. The church is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose.

Wine and regional tradition

Cultivated vineyards in Žibritov lie on the southern slope of Veinperg, also called Viničný vrch, above the valley of the Bebrava stream. The vines there have roots that are more than 70 years old; the vineyards are located at an altitude of 460 to 485 metres.

The regularly held event “Podsitnianske dni hojnosti” is listed in Žibritov for July. This summer folk festival takes place in Baďan, Prenčov, Žibritov or Kráľovce-Krnišov and features traditional craft demonstrations as well as regional specialities. These include oven-baked homemade bread, Podymníky, Osúchy, yeast cakes, Pagáče, Lokše, Šúľance, Párance, Lekvárové buchty, wild boar goulash, homemade grilled sausages, suckling pig and homemade schnapps.
