In Bzovík, fortress walls, sacred interiors and two different types of routes come together. The history of the place is reflected in its distinctive construction phases and architectural details, while cycling and hiking are associated with clearly described routes.

Culture and History

Bzovík Fortress is one of Slovakia’s oldest architectural monuments and was originally built around 1131 as a Benedictine monastery. Hrad Bzovík was converted into a fortress between 1530 and 1546, with a high surrounding wall, four corner bastions and a moat. Thus, the monastic foundation and the later fortification are directly connected in the same building.

The sacred architecture includes Kostol sv. Štefana Kráľa, a late Gothic–early Renaissance church with a Baroque interior. The interior of Kostol sv. Štefana kráľa includes a main altar from 1762 and side altars from 1744. Kostol sv. Štefana kráľa was built in 1606 as an extension of an earlier chapel. The Lourdes Grotto, Jaskynka Lurdskej Panny Márie, is located next to Kostol sv. Štefana kráľa. There is also a linden tree approximately 300 years old in front of the Catholic church in Bzovík.

For the fortified Bzovík monastery, visits were available either unguided or with a guide. Guided tours were available on Saturdays and Sundays at 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m., as well as on weekdays by prior arrangement, and lasted approximately 30 minutes.

Cycling

The Hontianska cyklomagistrála 011 is a 50.8 km-long paved road cycling route of medium difficulty. It connects Krupina and Detva and runs through the Hont region. The route begins at the ruins of the former Benedictine monastery above Bzovík, descends into the village center and then turns towards Krupina. The route is therefore clearly defined both by its starting point and by the connection between the two towns.

Hiking

The Krupina–Uňatín–Čabrad educational trail is a self-guided, linear, year-round hiking trail that can be used in both directions, with a focus on natural science and cultural history. One variant of the Krupina–Uňatín–Čabrad educational trail begins at Bzovík railway station. Alongside the road cycling route, it is therefore an independent trail with a different thematic focus.
