Holiday Apartment in Medovarce – Church and Historical Local Culture

Medovarce is located in the southern part of the Krupinská planina. The village lies in a valley enclosed on all sides; the Krupinica flows through the municipality. A closer look therefore includes not only individual buildings, but also traces of work, routes, and water.

Culture and History

A prominent landmark of Medovarce is the Evangelical Church. It was built in 1832 and thus represents an important historical reference point for the village. Several periods come together in the church interior: the Neoclassical organ dates from 1820 and was built by an unknown master. The Evangelical Church also contains a Late Gothic–Renaissance baptismal font made of hewn stone, dating from around 1500. A more than 500-year-old linden tree also stands near the Evangelical Church.

The church and its furnishings combine different forms of sacred design without the individual elements losing their own temporal and craftsmanship-related character. Alongside the 19th-century building, the organ and baptismal font represent older or otherwise distinct periods of the village’s history. Outside the church interior, the old linden tree adds another historical element to this ensemble.

Local Traditions

Historical viticulture, involving several varieties of own-rooted vines, played an important role in Medovarce. These vines are known as Samorodáky. Thus, a distinctive term from viticulture is also part of the inherited local history, complementing the architectural evidence with an agricultural tradition.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, beekeeping was widespread in Hont County. Bees were also kept in Medovarce; honey was used to make Medovina or Medovica. The two terms refer to the historical processing of honey and preserve a specific connection between beekeeping and local production.

Historical Routes

The historical Zlatá cesta ran along the edge of Medovarce through a hollow way. A historical inn stood beside the Zlatá cesta near Medovarce. Thus, both the course of an old route and an associated place to stop have been preserved in the history of this edge of the village.

Water

The Pavla Hajnala water mill preserved in Medovarce dates from the 19th century, is in comparatively good condition, is privately owned, and still retains part of its original technical equipment. Its name, construction period, and surviving technology give the mill a clearly identifiable place in local history.

A warm spring is located on the main road toward Rykynčice. Its temperature remains constant at approximately 20°C. Thus, alongside the Krupinica River, a spring with a consistent approximate temperature is also among Medovarce’s identified water features.
