Senohrad combines sacred architectural history, traditional folk culture, and a distinctive mountain landscape. The village is located in the Krupinská výšina upland, in the mountainous part of the Litavica valley. Baroque buildings, traditional events, and undulating mountain ridges create a multifaceted picture of this Slovak destination.

Culture

The Church of Saint Emmerich is a single-nave Baroque church with particularly richly designed interior furnishings. It was renovated in 2004. The electrical system was renewed, the interior was repainted after 70 years, and the exterior façade was repaired. The area’s older history is also tangible: settlement finds dating from the Roman Imperial period were discovered at the Prepoštovica site in the cadastral territory of Senohrad.

Senohrad is home to Ľudový dom Senohrad 20 – Múzeum tradičného bývania, a museum of traditional housing. The associated traditional folk farmhouse has a thatched roof; preserving it is intended to safeguard Senohrad’s original architecture. The Hrachovinka folklore group offers a lively way to engage with local traditions. Its program includes, among other things, Fašiangy, Jarmok, and Odchod na roboty. The group also collects materials from older residents in order to preserve, continue, and pass on local traditions to the next generation. Hrachovinka regularly takes part in the Čipka v Honte cultural program.

Another defining building is the Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk, built in 1748. It is a central Baroque octagonal structure with a projecting Neoclassical tower and a modern entrance hall. The chapel is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose.

Landscape

The cadastral territory of Senohrad consists of undulating mountain ridges that rise to the Kopaný Závoz ridge in the northeast. The ridges around Senohrad consist of andesitic pyroclastics, tuffs, and tuffites. The northern part of the area is covered with oak and beech forests. Different landscape forms therefore meet within the municipality: forested uplands, geologically distinctive mountain ridges, and the mountainous setting in the Litavica valley.

In Senohrad’s hunting grounds, the forest gradually transitions into agricultural land, forming extensive transitional zones known as ecotones. Turkey oak is the most common tree species there, followed by European beech, sessile oak, European hornbeam, and black locust. The same hunting grounds are home to red foxes, lynx, and wildcats, which are also present there permanently. The landscape is therefore defined not only by its terrain and forests, but also by the transitions between woodland and agricultural areas and by the animal species found there.

Surroundings

The mountains of Kopaný Závoz, Starý Laz, and Jasený Vrch are located in the vicinity of Senohrad. Mount Belakova is also situated near Senohrad. The Stará Huta ruins are likewise in the surrounding area. The mountains and ruins mentioned complement the picture of the immediate and wider surroundings without equating the different geographical areas.
